Solution 2 worked for me. I've had update issues for six months and the only solutions I found before this involved changing Registry among other steps.

I downloaded the updated drivers at the location that was mentioned in this article and got met with Microsoft Windows 7 always booting into the Startup Repair screen.
Luckily I had an image of my machine and just reapplied that image, however that step is dangerous and does not apply to every machine. Also what eventually worked for me because my problem was on the image was simply running a "Disk Cleanup" mode and cleaning everything out including the system files. That allowed the Windows update utility to work just fine… and probably should be the first step everyone tries.

I've recently had to use the second manual solution on two Windows 7 Pro bit systems. Forcing it to create a new SoftwareDistribution folder gets it back on track. Many thanks! This is good for people who are using window at home. But if you are going to try this method at any professional environment then its mean you have to download all the updates from the first day of your window installation. I don't recommend this method for professional environment.

My bad. I have used Step 2 above. It is now going through a very l-o-n-g process of checking the updates already installed on my Vista against the Windows download site. It is also rebuilding the "SoftwareDistribution" folder. If you noticed 5 in Step 3, it said to check for updates then "Leave your computer about an hour to find Updates. Hopefully that will do the trick. But for now I'm waiting to give Step 2 a chance to finish. LOL, in an age of instant everything, patience is truly a virtue.
