Luckily I had an image of my machine and just reapplied that image, however that step is dangerous and does not apply to every machine. I've recently had to use the second manual solution on two Windows 7 Pro bit systems. Forcing it to create a new SoftwareDistribution folder gets it back on track. Many thanks!
