Click at the top of the Layers sidebar, choose Color Adjustments, and turn on the Color Monochrome adjustment. To increase the brightness of saturated colors from the original image in your new black and white image, drag the Tone slider to the right, or to the left to decrease them.

As an example, the human eye can discern about 10 million different colors, so saving an image in 8 bits per channel is more than enough for quick enhancements, image compositions, and other basic edits.
